Variable Editions (V.E.)
art-centric terminology for algorithmic artwork
Everything I create is a one-of-a-kind that no one else in the world can own. My artwork is generated from my algorithmic code and/or parametric design that can explore infinite possibilities within my aesthetic style.
Historically, artists working in physical mediums (painting, sculpting, woodworking, etc.) put most of their effort into individually crafting works. These "originals" are sometimes part of a larger series or an artistic motif, but can also be individual creations. Regardless of the narrative or framing, their labor goes into individual creations.
From these originals, many artists choose to create "editions" by photographing their work and offering high quality replicas, often as prints. These can either be open editions with no limits on how many will be made, or as limited editions where a fixed number of reproductions will ever be made. The business strategy behind editions can be nuanced but to simplify, this practice allows artists to engage with a larger collector base while also earning more revenue from their efforts. Not everyone can afford originals, but they may afford an edition.
The terms Original and Edition are therefore rooted in the practice of making works that are then replicated in a manner that faithfully reproduces the overall aesthetic. My workflow differs greatly; my effort goes into crafting an algorithmic system that explores a latent domain space from which many generations yeild artwork. I could follow the traditional pattern of curating a set of originals and produce editions from them, but that doesn't feel right to me. Once the system is in place, it's very easy to continue exploring what it can produce by generating more outputs. It feels a lot more special to me if everyone interested in my work could have something unique.
Therefore, my artworks are Variable Editions — generated from a shared system but individually distinct.
What ties a collection together is the underlying procedural system, which does not change from edition to edition. What makes each edition unique is a seed (like a password) that instructs the system on how to execute, ensuring it will always produce the same output. From this paradigm, I have chosen to segment my work into Signature and Open variable editions, targeting different collector perspectives.
Signature (#)
Akin to Originals, intended for art collectors
An official part of my artistic oeuvre, I curate and produce each one individually from the system to fit my vision of the collection. Typically physical & limited to a fixed quantity, each is produced by hand, signed & numbered. Certificates of authenticity are provided with details, including the unique seed. They are generally of higher quality and larger dimensions. "What you see is what you get" is the experience when collecting.

Open (∞)
Similar to Prints, intended for fans of my work
Generated from the same system as Signatures, each is unique but may diverge from the common aesthetics in the collection. When offered as prints, they are pre-generated with light curation to pass quality control and are of smaller dimensions. While I will sign and mark physicals, they are not numbered and there is no limit to how many I will offer. When offered digitally, they may be generated on-demand at the time of payment or could be generated in your browser and collected once you find one you like. You get more of a "surprise" experience when collecting because the generation is done without you knowing the result.

While this framework largely describes how I offer my artwork, each collection will have its own unique system necessitating slight adjustments in how I can offer the work for collection. It's always best to read through the descriptions of my work so you'll know exactly what to expect.
